On the Second Day of December my wellbeing coach brought to me . . .

Two cracking shoves!

Have you noticed how fractious behaviour becomes at this time of year? Children falling out, everyone blaming and moaning. Cracks appear in staffroom conversations too!

Often, we adults respond differently to the dark days of winter and additional changes happening around us – even if we don’t celebrate Christmas, the adverts are everywhere and promote smiling families, plentiful food that appears from nowhere. This is not always realty.

Some families have far less food, some staff struggle financially - maybe you do? Pupils are either overly excited, pretending not to be bothered or finding it tricky to manage the sudden change and focus on money and buying on the TV and in the media. Other peoples expectations of a marvellous time run so very high and I don't know any person with a perfect life.

Why is that?

As humans we find expectation and change a little tricky to deal with, so many more demands upon us mentally: changing routines; our own expectations and SHOULDS.

The extra pressure of termly assessments, plays, concerts excited kids- surly kids; tired colleagues.

Perhaps we might be experiencing situations we do not enjoy.

There might be things beyond our comfort zone? Or something remind us of sadness, anxiousness- something worrying?

Our moods change as our thinking does.

The mind is like a prism, refracting our thoughts as our experiences (perceived feelings) throughout the day. Mostly those thoughts flow through, and when we are tired, we seem to hold on to them, building them into a huge sense of pressure.

12 days of wellbeing tip There is only the NOW to experience. Close your eyes momentarily and see if you can hear your thoughts. Not memories, but here, now . . . how long can you stay there?

WE are only ever one thought away from less pressure. OR TO BE TRUTHFUL, from less thinking about pressure.

Why not help one another?

Look out for NQT’s and new to school staff who may not quite have routines for managing unrest and misbehaviour. Expect ‘normal’ behaviour to be polite and respectful – both from adults and from children.

FOLLOW school behaviour policies can be so trying at busy stress filled thinking times – why not have a staff buddy system for back up.

  • STAY calm and take a break.

  • 5 seconds truly brings a breather for you

  • – 20 seconds a tiredness top up

  • – 30 seconds and you feel you have some ease.

Turn those seconds into minutes and feel brand new.

Drink EAT sleep DO NOT PUSH THROUGH. We only have a limited amount of battery power, don’t drain it completely!
